This image shows a lone tree in Llyn Padarn near Llanberis, Snowdonia.

I'm not sure why lone trees are so photogenic. They are obvious symbols of loneliness, longevity and survival and that is only emphasised when the tree sits in the shallow end of a lake, as here. From my perspective, I find a lone tree helps create a simple, uncluttered scene with a clear subject. Remove the tree from this image and it's not clear where to focus.

The obvious composition here is to place the tree in the 'cleft' of the mountain range in the distance but I chose not to do that as I wanted to keep the mountain range unobstructed. I also chose a long exposure to make the lake absolutely still and used a polariser to remove some of the glare from the lake.
